YC-PEM - Young Children's Participation and Environment Measure

What is it?

The YC-PEM is a parent-completed measure that looks at the different activities of children aged 0-5 years by evaluating the level of participation and qualities of the environment in which these activities take place. The results are then to be shared with the child’s health professional and therapy team to determine any adjustments to be made to help reach goals.

The YC-PEM 101 Tip Sheet provides practical information for using the YC-PEM in practice. Download it here. For more information about YC-PEM, please see our resources section.

The foundation for lifelong health begins during the first five years of your child’s life. When young children ages 0-5 years participate in activities that take place at home, at daycare/preschool, and in the community, they can experience healthy living and learn new skills. The Young Children’s Participation & Environment Measure (YC-PEM), completed by the parent or primary caregiver, and examines those activities in terms of the participation and the environment.

The survey has 3 sections:

  1. Home
  2. Daycare/preschool
  3. Community

Each section has 2 key parts:

  1. A part that asks about the child’s participation in activities in that setting.
  2. A part that asks about the impact of the environment on the child’s participation in that setting.

The measure is designed to help parents and caregivers record and share what is known and what changed about the child’s participation with professionals who can help reach goals.
